Current Work
I have two tiers of paintings, both stylized to varying degrees between realism and abstraction. Firstly, large canvases of expressionistic landscapes, and natural forms. Secondly, small cradled wood panels that are painted quickly outdoors on Vancouver's waterfront, beaches and seawall.
Painted Sketches
300 Degrees Northwest:
Views from the Studio
For twenty-five years I have painted from a studio on the Vancouver seawall. It faces 300 degrees northwest. In my view are Granville Island and Bridge, False Creek lagoon, the Coast Mountains, city skyline and astonishing sunsets. I have lost count of how many times I have interpreted it. It is a subject that I return to often, and a daily measure of peace, beauty, and creativity.
The Water
I particularly enjoy painting water. These images are of lakes and oceans, riversides and ports. 'Satellite Shots' is a series I began in 2008, painting the sea and land from a sky view. My interest in sailboats comes from my friendship with yacht designer Ron Holland.
Animated Portraiture
In the early 90s, painting was not a popular medium for young artists. So when I began it was with the intention of making bold, eye catching work. I enjoyed exhibiting giant cartoons in nightclubs and cafes, drawing from Toulouse-Lautrec and Warhol. Vancouver was becoming a global city, and I am glad to have experienced this vibrant era.
